Heathery Knowe Primary School Concert
As part of the band's youth development programme, King's Park Brass performed at a concert at Heathery Knowe Primary School in East Kilbride along with musicians both past and present from the school.
The band opened the evening with a preview of the dance-themed music which would feature at the forthcoming Rutherglen Town Hall concert. This included Let's Face the Music and Dance and I've Got You Under My Skin, old favourites that the younger members of the audience were able to recognise and enjoy too.
The King's Park Brass Junior Band then played First Sounds, Round, Hazelmere and The Saints. The Junior Band provides youngsters who are new to brass instruments with the chance to play together in a band for the first time.
This was followed by a performance from the King's Park Brass Youth Band of The Magic of the Beatles, a medley of many famous Beatles numbers. The Youth Band is the next step from the Junior Band and gives young players the opportunity to progress to more challenging pieces and perform in concerts, sometimes along with King's Park Brass itself.
After the interval the trombone section from Calderglen High School Brass Band gave a great rendition of I Will Follow Him from the movie Sister Act. Players from Heathery Knowe Woodwind and Heathery Knowe Brass then showcased their talents through a selection of solo and ensemble pieces.
Heathery Knowe Choir sang on their own and then along with King's Park Brass for a joint performance of Ye Banks and Braes. The band and the pupils both enjoyed playing together and saw how well voices and brass can complement each other.
The evening finished with King's Park Brass playing some more dance-themed pieces, culminating in The Floral Dance from the movie Brassed Off.
All in all the concert proved very successful, and the band hope that the children of Heathery Knowe have a better idea of the kind of experience they could look forward to in the future through taking up a brass instrument.
